In their first US Open Cup qualifier, the Seattle Sounders Select won the first half 2-1 but lost the match to the Spokane Shadow 3-2. Garth Cummings had two goals for Spokane including the match winner. Play was rough both ways with six yellow cards shown.
 
First Half
 
8 Cummings (Cosner). Alika Cosner on the left side passed to Cummings, whose shot nutmegged both his marker and goalkeeper Jonas Tanzer. 1-0 Spokane.
 
28 Burcar (Ness). Kurt Ness sent a diagonal ball from the goal line on the left to Scott Burcar 8 yards out from goal. Burcar turned and shot, and goalkeeper Ryan Wittstruck got his hands on the shot but could not manage the save. 1-1.
 
45 Somoza (Watson). In added time, Joe Watson passed to Ben Somoza, who carried the ball up the middle past two defenders, carried through goalkeeper Wittstruck, and poked the ball home from a yard away. 2-1 Seattle.
 
Joe Watson had an apparent goal from a free kick play called back on a close offside call.
 
Halftime:  Seattle 2 - 1 Spokane
 
67 Faridnia (Ready). Troy Ready's blast from 20 yards appeared to be caught above the knees by Tanzer, but the ball popped out in front and Abbas Faridnia pounced on it and shot it in, deflecting it off Tanzer. 2-2.
 
74 Cummings (Faridnia). Faridnia dropped a nice ball from the 6-yard line and Cummings buried the 15-yard shot up the middle for the match winner. 3-2 Spokane.
 
Final:  Seattle 2 - 3 Spokane
