Match report by Ron Stickney:

In a US Open Cup qualifier against a new D3-Pro franchise, the Seattle Sounders coasted to a 3-0 win over the Northern Nevada Aces. Rookie Rees Bettinger netted a pair of first-half goals and Christer Forsberg added a third in the second half.

First Half

Nevada had the first good chance in the 7th when Jaime Martinez took a shot from the arc on a free kick play, but he missed the far post.

For Seattle, Scott Jenkins' long service into the area gave Bettinger a header from 12 yards on the right, sent a yard over the top near corner. A centered ball gave Forsberg a chance from the spot, but a defender slid out to smother the shot. Leighton O'Brien's 20-yarder from the right just missed the top left corner, the first of several close misses by the midfielder.

Midway in the half, Kyle Smith dropped the ball for Jeremy Sweet, whose 25-yard shot was saved by Rob Buchanan at the lower near corner for the match's first save. Two minutes later, Nevada's Mike Sanneh sent a 25-yard shot up the middle to force Preston Burpo's first save.

From the middle, O'Brien bent a 25-yard shot at the top right corner and just missed.

31' Bettinger (Forsberg). Forsberg's pass from Seattle's side of the halfway line was too far for Bettinger, but the roller hit a clump of grass and goalkeeper Buchanan let the ball trickle between his legs. Bettinger went around Buchanan to slide the ball into the empty net, a shot Bettinger's mother could have finished. 1-0 Seattle.

Three minutes later Alfredo Chavarin got away from his marker for an open 10-yard shot from the left, Nevada's best chance of the match, but Burpo got a hand on the shot and slapped it onto the post for the save of the match.

39' Bettinger (Forsberg). Forsberg beat the offside trap for a through ball after a defensive turnover and was all alone on the left. Forsberg drew the keeper to the near post and sent a rolling cross to the far post, where Bettinger arrived to tap the ball into the empty net for another easy finish. 2-0 Seattle.

The final two minutes of the half saw three chances by Seattle. O'Brien's free kick was headed to the spot by Jason Farrell and Smith's volley just missed the lower left corner. From Smith's drop in the area, Bettinger got a chance at a hat trick but miskicked. O'Brien's 40-yarder was right at the top far corner, but Buchanan was there to intercept.

Halftime: Seattle 2 - 0 Northern Nevada

A surprise substitute for Seattle at the half was midfielder Sean Henderson, who had retired from pro soccer but apparently is now rejoining the team.

Nevada's Antonio Mora had the first good chance of the second half, making space and firing up the middle from 25 yards and forcing a high save by Burpo.

For Seattle, Forsberg held the ball on the left near the end line, then chipped it over the crowd at the near post and Jenkins outleaped a defender to head the ball, but hit the top side of the crossbar. Farrell won a ball on the right and sent in a diagonal roller for the onrushing O'Brien's shot from 18, but Buchanan dove to make the save. Farrell took a shot from the right and Buchanan saved overhead.

58' Forsberg (Jenkins). Bettinger sent the ball left for Jenkins, who crossed to the spot. Forsberg got his head on the ball just before Buchanan could get it and the headed shot bounced in next to the left post. 3-0 Seattle.

Soon after entering in the 60th minute, Chris Farnsworth's 25-yarder up the middle forced a good save at the right post by Buchanan. O'Brien was sprung past a defender at the arc and chipped over the onrushing Buchanan, only to see his shot go just wide of the post again. Farrell's cross was headed down by substitute Peter Hattrup for another O'Brien shot, again sent wide. Substitute Kei Kinoshita received a square ball inside the 18 for a shot from the right, sent two yards wide of the near post.

The final ten minutes saw three chances for Nevada. Chavarin got free for a 25-yarder, easily saved by Burpo. Substitute Mario Farfan's try from 35 yards was also easily saved. Finally, from a free kick play Farfan got a 25-yard chance but sent it a yard high.
