Match report by Ron Stickney:

The Seattle Sounders Select earned most of the good chances and finished a pair while shutting out the visiting Cascade Surge. Defender Bryn Ritchie played his first PDL match this season after recovering from an injury and he headed in the match winner in the first half. Greg Foisie added an insurance goal in the middle of the second half. Brandon Sewell earned the shutout for the winners.

Ritchie and midfielder Ben Somoza will play one more match with the Sounders Select, this Wednesday's US Open Cup match at MLS Dallas Burn, then they will leave to train with MLS LA Galaxy in July.

First Half

The two sides traded chances for the first half hour. Seattle's Somoza crossed from the right flag to give Zach Kingsley a header from the spot, but the leaping Kingsley couldn't quite reach all of the ball.

For Cascade, Allan Maragh's cross was barely out of reach of the head of David Schofield on a run up the middle. Juan Galavis won a deflected ball near the arc and shot low and accurately at the far post, but goalkeeper Brandon Sewell dove fully stretched to push the ball wide with one hand.

Foisie carried from his own half through the defense and into the penalty area for a 15-yard shot, foot-saved by goalkeeper Oliver Sanders, and the rebound gave Joe Watson a 20-yard chance that was wasted over the bar.

32' Ritchie (Somoza). Sy Reeves was tripped hard just outside the left edge of the area, two yards from the bye line. Somoza curled an inswinging free kick to the far post, where Ritchie rose to head just inside the middle of the close post. Sanders reached the ball as the ball reached the post, but he was a tiny fraction of a second too late to prevent the goal. 1-0 Seattle.

Halftime: Seattle 1 - 0 Cascade

The next quarter of a match was dominated by Seattle. A 10-yard shot by substitute Todd Stauber forced a sideways dive by Sanders, who parried the ball wide to a defender. Foisie fought off his marker for a 15-yard shot from the left, but Sanders dove towards the far post to snare the ball. Kingsley up the middle fed an open Reeves on the right for a 15-yard try with Sanders charging, but the blast was a yard high. Wonderful footwork by Somoza at the arc let him elude three defenders to send a short diagonal pass forward to the open Foisie, who missed a 10-yarder when he ought to have put it on goal.

Cascade were suddenly dangerous when an attack entered the penalty area and a cross to the spot led to a shot that was blocked, and the rebound fell for Roger Groome for a chip from 10 yards that curled the wrong way and missed the top far corner by half a yard.

In the 76th, Kingsley carried up the middle and worked a long wall pass with Foisie to earn a header from 8 yards, saved overhead by Sanders.

77' Foisie (Kingsley). The same pair of attackers were immediately at it again, this time Kingsley open on the right for a pass and a nice cross that curled in towards the spot. Out from the far post, Foisie was first to the cross and sent a perfect shot low and in off the base of the far post. 2-0 Seattle.

Cascade soon had an opportunity as Groome crossed from the right to give Tony Whittaker a 20-yard shot up the middle, but he miskicked the shot and sent it well wide. Then Groome's 20-yarder up the middle went wide.

The 86th minute gave Cascade their best chance as a ball chipped over the defense inside the area gave Ahmed Figueroa a 10-yard chance with seemingly only the goalkeeper to beat, but Ritchie somehow got in the way just in time to completely block the shot and preserve the shutout.
