Burpo, Welton lead Sounders to victory

(Milwaukee, WN) - Preston Burpo made the key saves and Welton scored another decisive goal as the Seattle Sounders edged the Milwaukee Wave United 2-1 in A-League action Sunday at Pat Jones Field. The win pushed the Sounders' record back above .500 at 5-1-4 (W-D-L).

Seattle opened the scoring in the 35th minute. Midfielder Sean Henderson sprinted by a Milwaukee defender through the left side of the penalty box, lofting a shot off his right foot toward the Milwaukee net. Milwaukee defender Steve Lawrence knocked it past goalkeeper Jim Larkin and into the net.

The Sounders lead looked to be in jeopardy in the 43rd minute when defender Zach Scott was called for a foul inside the penalty box. Milwaukee's Johnny Torres tried to sneak his penalty kick under the cross bar. 'Keeper Burpo guessed right and forced Torres to shoot high and his shot skimmed off the top of the crossbar.

Seattle extended their lead in the early going of the second half. Viet Nguyen took the ball down the right touchline into Milwaukee territory. Even with the top of the penalty area he slid a pass back to defender Marco Velez, 25 yards out. Velez sent the ball across the top of the box to Roger Levesque, who headed it towards the far post. Welton leaped, throwing out his right leg, and snapped the ball inside the right post in the 54th minute. It is his team leading 5th goal of the season and 4th match winner.

The Wave United sliced the Seattle lead in half when former Sounder Greg Howes slipped a ball just past a diving Burpo at the left post in the 62nd minute.

Milwaukee threatened to tie the game on numerous occasions over the final 28-minutes of the game, only to be thwarted by Burpo's acrobatics. His biggest save came when he reached to knock down a Howes free kick from 20-yards out as it curled toward the back of the net at the right post.

Seattle has now defeated Milwaukee (1-1-5) twice this season, each time by a 2-1 score. The Sounders return to Qwest Field June 19th to host Rochester, then go back on the road for four more games including a rematch with the Wave United in Milwaukee July 2nd.
