Match report from Sounders FC:

Will Bates scored his first goal for Sounders FC as Seattle beat the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-1, in the MLS Reserve League on Tuesday night at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.

The win marked the first of the season for Seattle reserves (1-1-1, 4 points) as the Earthquakes reserves (0-3-0, 0 points) lost their third straight.

Sounders FC first scored in the 56th minute on an own goal. Mario Martinez found Philip Lund on the right flank, and Lund sent a cross into the box where San Jose defender Hunter Gorskie deflected it into the net.

Recent signee Will Bates doubled Seattle's lead in the 72nd minute when he knocked in a rebound after a scrum in the box following a corner kick.

San Jose pulled one back in second-half stoppage time following a corner kick in the box. After Hahnemann saved a first-time shot from point-blank range, Gorskie knocked in the rebound for the Earthquakes lone goal.

Seattle rookie Eriq Zavaleta was dangerous throughout the match. In the 8th minute, Zavaleta settled an Alex Caskey pass in the box, turned his defender and blasted a shot that was saved by San Jose keeper Evan Newton.

Later in the half, Zavaleta broke free from his defender and rocketed a 25-yard shot that barely sailed over the crossbar. In the 72nd minute, David Estrada played Zavaleta into the box where he blasted a shot to the upper corner that was parried wide by Newton.

San Jose's Adam Jahn created several opportunities in the first half, including a 6th minute shot that was blocked by Seattle centerback Ashani Fairclough. Five minutes later, Jahn fed Mike Fucito in the box but his shot was stopped by an onrushing Marcus Hahnemann.

Earthquakes midfielder Cordell Cato one-timed a shot from 10-yards out in the 60th minute that was stopped by Hahnemann. In the 78th minute, Sam Garza sent a shot that nearly found the net but missed just high of the crossbar.

Forward David Estrada returned to competitive action for the first time since suffering an eye injury on March 30 at Real Salt Lake. Estrada played the final 33 minutes of the match as a second-half substitute.
