Match report from Ron Stickney:

The fans expected a lot of goals, as the California Jaguars were on a 12-match losing streak since letting their original roster go due to cash-flow problems. The Seattle Sounders tallied 7 goals, David Hoggan first from a free kick and Peter Hattrup last on a corner-kick play. In between, Mark Baena and Erik Storkson each netted a pair and Patrick Beech added one. The California Jaguars scored once in the second half when Franco Raudazzo, their player who impressed the most, found the net.

Jason Annicchero sat out the match due to yellow card accumulation, giving Paul Gelvezon the full 90 minutes at left midfield. Backup goalkeeper Preston Burpo came on as a substitute to log his first minutes of this regular season, as did rookie Ian Russell who was finally off the injured list.

First Half

It didn't take long for the Sounders to rack up a comfortable lead. After a couple of early shots on goal by Beech and Storkson, the first goal came from a free kick.

10' Hoggan. Hoggan curled a 25-yard free kick into the top left corner for the 1-0 lead. Storkson nearly added another when his header from the right hit the underside of the crossbar. The rebound went off keeper Rafael Santiago to a defender, who cleared. Then, Seattle struck twice in two minutes.

16' Baena (Prideaux). Brandon Prideaux fed Baena at the top of the penalty area. Baena beat Santiago with a straight shot just inside the post.

18' Beech (Baena). Baena was put free on the left. Santiago stopped Baena's shot with his hand, but Beech was following up and trapped the rebound and sent it into the open net for an early 3-0 lead.

Midway in the half, California earned some chances. On a run up the middle, John Cairel was just wide left. Santiago Aguilera was put free on the right, but he bent his shot the wrong way and hit the side netting. Cairel took a 25 yarder up the middle but right into Dusty Hudock's belly.

For Seattle, Storkson sprung Baena for a shot from the left, saved by a diving Santiago. Beech sent a corner kick to Storkson in front of the goal and Storkson netted it, but he was called offside on the play. From a short corner, McCormick hit the top inside of the far post but the ball came back onto the pitch.

For the Jaguars, Jonas Persson advanced up the left side and fired on goal, but right at Hudock.

39' Baena (Gelvezon). Gelvezon centered a ball that Baena won after it deflected off a defender. Baena touched it past the defender and slotted it home from 15 yards for a 4-0 lead.

43' Storkson (Prideaux). Prideaux's full-speed-ahead run up the right side ended with a square, low cross from the right for Storkson at the near post. Storkson's shot deflected off Santiago and spun up and into the goal for a 5-0 halftime lead.

Halftime:  Seattle  5 - 0  California

California's Aguilera took the first shot of the second half, but Hudock easily saved.

Hattrup was tripped from behind and a pushing war ensued, but referee Mohammed Zharrabi-Kashani restored order without using his cards. Prideaux put Baena free on the right for a cross to Storkson at the left post. With an open goal in front of him, Storkson blew the chance by kicking the ball over the bar from the 6-yard line.

Aguilera was sprung with a through ball but Hudock came out to the 18 to block the shot.

59' Raudazzo (Cairel). On a California attack, Seattle couldn't quite clear the ball from their 18-yard line. Cairel touched the ball to Raudazzo, who was open and beat Hudock with the shot to put the Jaguars on the scoreboard 5-1.

61' Storkson (Baena). Seattle came right back when Baena ran down a through ball to keep it from going over the end line and curled a perfect cross for Storkson to head in at the far post.

Hattrup earned a couple of shots, just missing the far post from the left side and forcing a save on a shot up the middle.

Raudazzo took a similar pair of shots for California, the first saved by Hudock and the second wide of the far post. Cairel got a chance from a Raudazzo cross, forcing substitute goalkeeper Burpo's first save.

84' Hattrup (McCormick). McCormick's corner kick was sent low to the 18-yard line for Hattrup, who set himself up and shot to the upper right corner, hitting the underside of the crossbar on the way in, for the final goal.
