Sounders Announce 2004 Schedule

Home Opener May 8th - 7pm

(Seattle, WA) - The Seattle Sounders today announced their 2004 schedule, including 14 home matches played at Seahawks Stadium. The Sounders' home opener is May 8th at 7 pm against A-League newcomer, the Edmonton Aviators.

The home schedule includes visits from Western Conference staples: the Portland Timbers, Vancouver Whitecaps, Minnesota Thunder and Milwaukee Wave United. A yet-to-be-named Calgary team also rolls into Seattle for two matches.

Two Eastern Conference teams also travel to Seattle. The Rochester Raging Rhinos play in Seattle on June 19th while another first-year club, the Puerto Rico Islanders, roll into town on August 22nd.

Seattle pays a visit to a pair of Eastern Conference teams, the defending A-League Champion Charleston Battery and the Atlanta Silverbacks. The Sounders also visit each Western Conference team two times during the 2004 season.

Head coach Brian Schmetzer said, "I'm excited about getting the 2004 season started. Our guys will again work hard to bring a championship to Seattle."

As in previous years, Sunday matches begin at 5 pm with all other matches kicking off at 7 pm.

Five men's matches will feature doubleheader matches with the Sounders women's team. Those dates are May 15, June 19, and July 7, 17, and 25. Women's matches begin three hours prior to men's contests.

The Sounders home and home series with the Portland Timbers on May 1 and 15 doubles as Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying with the winner advancing to the next round in June. The Sounders advanced to the quarter finals of the 2003 Open Cup before being defeated by the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in the United States.

The playoff structure for the 2004 season has been modified. A total of eight (8) teams will qualify for post-season play. Those teams will be comprised of the top four teams from each conference (there will be no divisions within conferences). All playoff rounds will be two-legged aggregate score series with the exception of the A-League Championship, which will be a single match played on Saturday, September 18th.
