From today's Sounders news release:

Sounders re-sign Zach Scott, return tough defense for 2004

(Seattle, Wash.) - - The Seattle Sounders have re-signed defender Zach Scott for the 2004 season. Last season Scott was a part of the Sounders relentless defense that gave up only 24 goals in 28 regular season matches.

The 2003 season saw Scott play 2,184 minutes in 24 matches and score two goals from his defender position.

"He is a very physical player who has a good combination of skills and desire," said Brian Schmetzer, head coach of the Sounders. "In my opinion Zach Scott was the most improved player in the A-League, and by the end of last season had Major League Soccer teams calling about his play."

"Zach has unlimited potential and a bright future with the Seattle Sounders," said Schmetzer.

Entering his third professional season, Scott began his career with the Sounders in 2002 after he graduated from Gonzaga University.

"I'm excited with the direction the club is heading," said Scott. "The veterans returning are the most talented and knowledgeable players I've ever had the opportunity to play with and having Brian (Schmetzer) as the head coach will continue to help me grow as a player."

Scott, from Haiku, Hawaii, attended Maui High School where he was a three-time All-MIL soccer selection and was a member of the All-State team his senior year.

The signing of Scott adds him to the list of several key defensive players including Danny Jackson, Scott Jenkins and Ryan Edwards who will be back for 2004.

"With the players we've signed this year we should definitely be a force to be reckoned with come Open Cup and post-season time," said Scott.

The Sounders preseason kicks off April 3rd against La Liga Hispana All-Stars at 7pm at the new Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila.
