Top Ten Megson Quotes

Over the past two years, Seattle Sounders head coach Neil Megson has said some things in the press that have made us wince. With some research into the microfilm files at the library, we collected a full list of them. Below is our top ten list of Megson quotes, all from your local Seattle Times and Seattle PI.

10After signing defender Mark Watson, Megson commented, "He is big, he's tough and he's mean. He's just my type of player."
9After Jason Dunn scored in a 2-0 victory over Rochester, Megson said, "Why he hasn't done that in the first 20 games is beyond me. He knows I haven't been happy with him... The only reason he started was because Niall Thompson was sick. I said, 'His misfortune might be your fortune. So go out and prove me wrong - prove to me that you're a good player.' He goes out, works hard and gets a goal."
8After a 0-1 home loss to Vancouver, Megson criticized the team for what he called "the worst performance in the Sounders' three-year history." Then he singled out a player, "Dick McCormick has not been playing well. I thought his work ethic was poor."
7After Seattle defeated Rochester 1-0 at home, Megson expressed his unhappiness with Joey Leonetti's inconsistent work rate, "Sometimes they need a swift kick in the butt to get them going."
6Criticizing El Paso coach Lira for overly defensive tactics when the Patriots held the Sounders to a scoreless draw in Seattle, with Seattle winning the CrapShootout, Megson said, "They're at the bottom and they deserve it. The only good thing that came out of this game is that they had to travel so far and got nothing. I said [to Lira], '...your style's a joke.' That's the first time I've ever seen the sweeper play behind the goalkeeper."
5After trouncing Suriname First Division champion S.V. Transvaal 10-0 in a CONCACAF Champions Cup match, Megson declared, "I'm disappointed with the standard of soccer in Suriname."
4After trading Jason Dunn to the SeaDogs for Dion Earl, Megson said, "We wish the best for Jason, who has now begun to prove he can play indoor, but we've run out of patience with his outdoor performance and lack of goals."
3After Mike Gailey notched a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win over Orlando, Megson said, "About three games ago, I had a heart-to-heart talk with Mike and I told him his work rate stunk and that he wasn't creating anything. Since then, he's responded like a league leader." So much for confidentiality!
2After last year's A-League Commissioner, Richard Groff, delayed the deciding game of the best-of-three semifinal series against Colorado by one day so that Colorado's Jamaican players could return from a national team match (Seattle won the game 3-0), Megson said, "Richard Groff has done everything to keep Seattle out of the finals. He has to be the sickest man in soccer at the moment. He's got to be absolutely sick, and I couldn't be happier." Upset at Groff for a delay in announcing that the 1996 A-League Championship Match would be held in Seattle (Seattle earned the right by having the higher season record, but the Rochester owner offered the Seattle owners $40,000 to move the match to Rochester), Megson added, "We'll seat him in Section 359-million, behind the stadium. We won't even let him in." Megson was fined by the Sounders for his comments.

And the number one Megson quote is:
1After signing four new players in midseason, Megson forecast, "Some people are going to lose their jobs."
