The Seattle Sounders beat the Skagit Valley Marlins 5-0 in a preseason match in Mt. Vernon. Goals came from Greg Howes, Andrew Gregor, Rashid Utush (a pair) and Nick Kalafatich.

Playing for the first time for Seattle were the signed Ali John (AJ) Utush (age 22) and Rashid Utush (20), along with their brother, Hamid Utush (24), who was trying out for the team. All three brothers started for Seattle. Particularly impressive were AJ and Rashid, both showing good ball skills and speed.

First Half
 
6' Howes (Nguyen). Rookie Howes opened the scoring when he knocked in the rebound after goalkeeper Drew Smiley saved a shot from Viet Nguyen.

The best shot for Skagit Valley was a 25th-minute blast from the right by Juan Fajardo which was pushed wide of the top near corner by Preston Burpo.

AJ Utush showed an affinity for attacking, getting off two shots from corner kick plays and one long shot from a run up the right side.

45' Gregor (McCormick). From the arc, Dick McCormick pushed a pass behind the defense for Gregor, whose timed run put him 1v1 against Smiley. Gregor slid a low shot past Smiley for a goal in added time.

Halftime:  Skagit Valley 0 - 2 Seattle
 
67' R Utush (Gregor). Gregor's pass from his own half of the pitch put the speedy Rashid Utush free. He carried the ball past the 'keeper on the left side of goal and slotted the ball between Smiley and the post.

69' R Utush (Wood). Brian Wood's pass put Rashid Utush off to the races on the right side. Utush carried the ball to the goal line five yards to the right of goal, then fired an accurate shot between Smiley and the near post, the ball hitting the left side netting inches from the far post.

Rashid Utush had a couple of chances at a hat trick over the next three minutes, a header from Gregor's long cross and a hard shot from Gregor's short pass, the latter forcing a good save.

82' Kalafatich (Nguyen). Nguyen was sprung free behind the defense and dribbled straight at goal, drawing Smiley out before passing left for Kalafatich to finish.
