Match report by Ron Stickney:

The Gonzaga University Bulldogs gave the Seattle Sounders a good match, ending in a 2-2 draw. Gonzaga gave the Sounders the early lead with an own goal, then soon leveled the score when Alika Cosner scored from a misplay by a Seattle defender. Seattle took the early in the second half from Erik Storkson's goal, but Gonzaga answered 3 minutes later when Brian Ching scored on a free kick play. The match was played on a sunny spring day on grass at the Tri-Cities Youth Soccer Association complex, with the fans sitting on a grass bank that surrounded the field.

Playing for Seattle were trialists Gaston Pernia, Josh Houle, Matt Blasdel and Chip Brown. Nick Kalafatich played in his first preseason match. Kalafatich was signed in the middle of the previous season but saw playing time only with the Seattle Sounders Selects.

First Half

The first half was a hard-fought affair, with 19 fouls and 3 cautions. The first shot didn't come until the 8th minute when Dick McCormick sent one well over the bar.

10' Gonzaga own goal. Nguyen beat two consecutive defenders near the right touch line to enter the penalty area and send a dangerous cross in the air to the far post. The cross was just over the head of one Sounder and with another threatening, a Gonzaga defender tried to deal with it and inadvertently tapped the ball in.

Another cross by Nguyen was right on the head of an open and waiting Storkson, and the header was fired just wide of the near post.

21' Cosner. Ching sent in a dangerous far-post cross from the left and Scott Jenkins miskicked it, rolling the ball right in front of the goal for Cosner, who put a low shot past Preston Burpo to level the score at 1-1.

Fouls outnumbered goal-scoring chances by a wide margin for the balance of the half. Andrew Gregor put a 35-yard free kick on goal but right to Gonzaga goalkeeper Trevor Yost. In the final minute, Jason Kuska was just over the bar with a hard shot from the right.

Halftime:  Gonzaga 1 - 1 Seattle

52' Storkson (Nguyen). Nguyen's cross was knocked down by a defender's arm and the ball rolled to an open Storkson in the middle 15 yards from goal. Storkson's blast was parried up by Yost but the ball looped goalward. Yost ran back and dove on the ball right on the goal line, but the assistant referee on the goal line raised his flag and sprinted up the touch line, signaling that the whole ball had crossed over the line before Yost gathered it in. Seattle had the lead again 2-1, but it wouldn't last for long.

55' Ching (Faridnia). Gonzaga set up a free kick from just outside the right corner of the penalty area. Abbas Faridnia bent a sharp cross into the penalty area, finished just inside the far post by Ching from the spot. Back to level at 2-2.

Seattle trialist Josh Houle set up Storkson at the far post for a header that was sent wide. Houle's short pass gave Greg Howes a chance that hit the top of the crossbar.

For Gonzaga, Ching sent in a dangerous, low cross but the sliding Kuska couldn't quite reach it.

Kei Kinoshita saw his near-post attempt saved, and Storkson was just wide with a header from Jenkins' throw-in.

In the 83rd, Jenkins received his second yellow card for an ill-advised challenge from behind on Kuska. Jenkins was sent off and Kuska limped off.

Short a man, Seattle were doing most of the attacking for the final 7 minutes. Only one good chance resulted, when Brian Wood's shot from 15 yards sneaked through a crowd and was pushed wide by the diving goalkeeper.
