Match report by Ron Stickney:

Project-40 came back from a two-goal halftime deficit to draw the Seattle Sounders 2-2. The result gave Project-40 the title to the Canterbury Classic tournament with a win and a draw. Two nights earlier, Project-40 had defeated tournament host Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1, then the next night Vancouver beat the Sounders 2-1.

Seattle won the first half with an early goal by Christer Forsberg and another tally from Leighton O'Brien. Project-40 responded with a second-half goal by Alex Bengard and a penalty kick by Devin Barclay.

The match concludes Seattle's preseason with a 3-2-2 record.

First Half

8' Forsberg (O'Brien). For the second consecutive night, Forsberg found the net early. Viet Nguyen beat his marker at the left side of the penalty area and served a short pass to O'Brien, who fed another short ball to Forsberg for a volley inside the near post from 10 yards. 1-0 Seattle.

The match quickly showed a tendency towards rough play, and by the end there would be 48 fouls. Referee Cory Dean started using his yellow card early, cautioning Kieran Barton in the 9th minute for a foul at the top of arc. The resulting free kick was deflected wide of goal by the wall.

In the 11th, Jose Burciaga put Project-40's first shot on goal with a rocket from 35, but sent right at goalkeeper Preston Burpo's gut.

25' O'Brien (Smith). Scott Jenkins' service to the top of the penalty area went to Kyle Smith while O'Brien was in an offside position, but a defender put O'Brien on before Smith's pass and O'Brien volleyed inside the far post. Goalkeeper Matt Nyman raised his arm wanting an offside call, but the assistant referee correctly ignored the plea. 2-0 Seattle. Immediately after the goal O'Brien was shown the yellow card, probably for his reaction after being elbowed in the mouth. O'Brien left temporarily for medical attention, then he was soon replaced by Ryan Edwards.

Project-40 had the next couple of chances. Bengard's 12-yard header from a free kick was saved by Burpo. From a loose ball, Mario Longo's 18-yarder had eyes for the bottom right corner but Burpo dove nicely to slap it wide of the post.

Seattle ended the half with chances to pad their lead. Farrell's cross through the penalty area was fired by Edwards from 15, but he hit the side netting. Jeremy Sweet got a chance from 10 on a through ball, but he missed the far post when he had plenty of unguarded goal to aim for.

Halftime: Seattle 2 - 0 Project-40

53' Bengard. After a near own goal by Seattle, a broken corner kick play gave Bengard the ball at the top left corner of the penalty area. Bengard beat his man and hit the top far corner from the left edge of the area. 2-1 Seattle.

60' Barclay (PK). After substitute Chris Farnsworth gave away the ball near Seattle's penalty area, Edson Buddle received a pass and broke through before being tripped by Sweet for a penalty kick. Devin Barclay put the PK perfectly into the lower left corner, just out of reach of the diving Burpo. 2-2.

A Project-40 free kick was deflected wide to Barclay for a shot from the left, saved by Burpo.

Seattle should have gone ahead in the 66th. Smith's cross from the right corner was nearly turned into an own goal by a Project-40 defender, but the ball hit high on the left post and rebounded right in front of an empty goal. Farnsworth came running up the middle and ought to have just directed the ball into the goal but instead he tried to turn it into a net ripper and skied it well over the bar from 8 yards.

Barclay got through for a 1v1 but pushed the ball too far and Burpo slid out to take it.

At 81' Sweet was nearly free into the penalty area, but a good slide tackle by a defender deprived Sweet of the ball.

Project-40 had a flurry of chances at a match winner in the 85th. Buddle's near-post attempt was pushed just wide by Burpo. From the long corner kick, another Buddle shot was pushed high and wide by Burpo for another corner, which led to Bengard's 20-yarder that was a yard wide of the near post.

Substitute Kei Kinoshita gave Seattle one last chance in the 87th when he put substitute Casey Barber free into the penalty area with only Nyman to beat, but Nyman quickly slid out for the block save.
