Midfielder Tara Bilanski had a goal and a assist to help lead the Seattle Sounders Select over the Portland Rain 3-1 in a entertaining W-League match.
The Select Women were in control of most of the match and only needed four minutes to jump on the scoreboard. Select forward Tami Bennett headed the ball into the net from just outside the six-yard box with the assist coming from midfielder Laurie Klein. The Select Women had an additional seven shots in the first half but were unable to convert on any of their other chances.
Second half sub Nicole Martinez scored the match-winning goal in the 76th minute. Bilanski played a through ball to Martinez who scored on a low shot from 14 yards out. Martinez had just entered the game in that same minute.
Portland were able to get a goal back in the 83rd minute when forward Noelle Miller scored while shielding off two defenders. Her goal came on a pass from midfielder Cassie Giles. The Select Women countered with their own goal when Tara Bilanski converted a penalty kick from a hand ball call in the 87th minute. Select forward Kaitlin Miyake had a shot in the penalty kick area that was blocked by the hand of Rain defender Janay Mountain. The foul resulted in the penalty kick.
Post Match Quotes:
Select Women's midfielder Tara Bilanski:
"I missed my last two penalty kicks so I was looking around for somebody
else to take it. Nobody wanted to, so I had to take it. I'm glad it went
in."
Select Women's Coach Chance Fry:
"This was a good effort by the women. It's all the more better considering
we had three high school going to college players in the starting lineup.
This game was just like the one last week again Mile High except we scored
on some of the chances we had tonight. This is a win that will help us
for next weekend's games at Denver and Fort Collins."
