Match report by Ron Stickney:

The Seattle Sounders came up short on offense, losing 1-0 to the Rochester Raging Rhinos. It was Rochester's first win in Seattle in 5 matches. Chris Carrieri scored the lone goal late in the match.

First Half

Both sides played the first half with a 4-4-2 lineup. In Seattle's case, it was the defensive midfield we've been seeing lately, Jason Farrell and Sean Henderson in the middle, Chad Brown on the right, and offense-minded Viet Nguyen on the left. Seattle would take just two shots the first half, but Rochester would take only three.

Neither side could manage a shot until midway in the half, when Welton fired low from the arc and forced a Soren Johnson save.

In the 24th minute John Wilson dropped Brown with a hard, hockey-style body check right in front of Seattle's bench. There was no card, perhaps due to Brown's karma. Two minutes later, though, Brown was shown the yellow for retaliating.

Welton had a couple of chances, then in the 34th Rochester finally took their first shot, a 25-yarder by Kirk Wilson that forced a routine diving save by Preston Burpo.

The half ended with just five shots taken between the two sides, none of them close to finding net. There were only five fouls called.

Halftime: Seattle 0 - 0 Rochester

Over the next 20 minutes Rochester brought on four subs and Seattle replaced defensive midfielders Brown and Henderson with attackers Darren Sawatzky and Kyle Smith. Seattle managed a couple of shots that weren't close and Rochester took their first shot of the half in the 61st, also not close.

Then Seattle's Welton created some excellent chances. In the 63rd, from a broken corner kick play, Viet Nguyen's cross past goal gave unmarked Welton a header from close on the right, but he missed the far post by a half yard. Roger Levesque fed Welton a perfect ball as Welton ran up the middle and with only the goalkeeper to beat Welton hit the outside of the post. Marco Velez' shot from the right was deflected to Levesque at the arc, and his low shot was saved nicely by a collapsing Johnson.

The tide turned for Rochester in the 72nd, as Wilson forced a save with a 20-yarder up the middle and then substitute Doug Miller got in close only to bend his shot the wrong way. Carrieri fired at the top near corner from the corner of the penalty area, and Burpo did well to tip it over the bar.

76' Carrieri (Sedgewick). A long diagonal cross went over everybody and Carrieri ran in unmarked to head it from 6 yards past Burpo and inside the far post. 1-0 Rochester.

Rochester came close in the 87th on a corner kick play when Sedgewick hit the far post squarely.

Since the goal, Seattle only managed one good chance, in added time, when Welton dropped the ball to substitute Craig Tomlinson, but his shot went two yards wide of the near post.
