Sounders start road trip with loss to Silverbacks

The Seattle Sounders started a four-match road trip with a 1-0 loss to the Altanta Silverbacks in A-League action Friday at DeKalb Memorial Stadium in Clarkston, GA. The setback pushes the Sounders record back under .500 at 5-1-6.

The Sounders created a number of first-half scoring chances but came up empty. Twice Welton got behind the Silverbacks defenders only to be chased down and taken off the ball before getting off a shot.

Late in the first half Altanta pushed the ball into the penalty box in front of the Seattle goal and got off three shots before finding the back of the net. Sounders goalkeeper Preston Burpo made three stops on point blank shots but each time the rebound got away from his grasp. Finally Atlanta's Mac Cozier slipped the ball through two Sounders to Gary Brooks at 16 yards out. Brooks used his right foot to sneak it inside the right post.

Atlanta controlled much of the action in the second half though Seattle did have a couple of scoring opportunities. Midfielder Viet Nguyen blasted one from 23 yards that Atlanta 'keeper Joe Barton knocked down but could not control. His defenders came to his aid and cleared the ball out before any Sounder could jump on the loose ball.

Late in the game Welton got a stride behind the Silverbacks defenders off the right side of the penalty box. Barton came out to challenge. Welton was able to sneak a ball past him but defender Adilson DeLima, backing up Barton, was able to clear the ball away from the front of the goal.

Seattle heads to South Carolina Saturday to play the defending A-League Champion Charleston Battery. The Sounders don't return home to Qwest Field until July 7th when they host the Edmonton Aviators.
