Match report by Ron Stickney:

The Seattle Sounders Women couldn't score against the Vancouver Whitecaps Women, but the visitors scored to win 1-0. Brittany Timko got the lone goal near the end of the first half.

First Half

Vancouver attacked well from the start, forcing a couple of routine saves in the first 6 minutes.

Seattle broke through the tough Vancouver defense for a good chance in the 12th minute, when Erin Redwine sent a diagonal ball to the far side for Brenda Mueller wide open on the far post run, but the pass was a couple of steps too far in front of Mueller. With an accurate pass, Mueller would have had an easy goal. A ball sent ahead into the area for Chalise Baysa let her get a close shot with the 'keeper closing in, but she hammered it wide when an slower, accurate shot might have beaten Erin McLeod.

Midway in the half Vancouver's Amber Allen blasted a 25-yard shot up the middle, and Meghan Miller made an excellent diving save at the post.

41' Timko (Thorlakson). After almost 20 minutes with no good chances from either side, Vancouver suddenly were on the scoreboard. Katie Thorlakson crossed the ball from left of the penalty area. From behind, Timko ran past two defenders to get her head on the cross and she flicked it past Miller to the far side of the goal. 1-0 Vancouver.

Halftime: Seattle 0 - 1 Vancouver

A corner kick in the opening minute of the second half gave Seattle a chance when Shannon Forslund headed a shot sharply at the bar, but McLeod snagged it overhead.

For Vancouver, Kara Lang, who came on at the half, sent in a powerful cross from the right corner to give Martina Franko a chance, but the volleyed shot from 10 yards went just over the bar. Lang powered a 20-yarder up the middle as she fell, forcing a save by Miller at the post. Thorlakson's marker fell, giving Thorlakson a 16-yard shot, but she sent it a yard too high.

It had been awhile since Seattle had a decent chance, when in the 73rd Katie Miyake's shot/cross from the top right corner of the penalty area just missed the far post, with Mueller sliding in feet first and almost reaching the ball. That was Seattle's last good shot of the match.

The last 15 minutes saw Seattle pushing up looking for the equalizer, and Vancouver earned plenty of shots. Lang missed two shots in the 77th minute while very open. Timko was served in open space on the right and shot from 15 yards with only Miller to beat, but rolled it just wide of the far post. Substitute Phebe Trotman went in on Miller for a close shot, and Miller slid down for the block save, the rebound giving Trotman a second chance that was sent well over the bar. Trotman had one more chance in the 90th, close to Miller, but Miller made the save.
