Match report from the Sounders FC
Typical MLS reserve games of the past pit rosters of bench players against each other on remote fields.
Friday morning was a little bit different when the Sounders FC played a reserve match against Concordia University from Portland. The game was played on the same Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field that housed over 32,000 in the expansion club's inaugural game the night before. Also making the event different was No. 10 in Seattle's blue kit. Sounders FC designated player Freddie Ljungberg suited up and played about 35 minutes in the exhibition, setting up Jarrod Smith for a goal around the 30th minute.
He looked great attacking Concordia's defense and creating chances for his teammates throughout his time on the field.
"It was good. It was good for him to get 35 minutes. Games are always a little bit different then training," said head coach Sigi Schmid, who was celebrating his 56th birthday today. "He started slowly and got his confidence. It was good to get that out of the way; to get that first 11 v 11 where it's live."
Smith also looked good playing alongside Roger Levesque up top.
Jeff Parke also made his debut and he will be training with the team. Parke was taken in the expansion draft out of New York and trained overseas before returning to the US last week. He is not currently under contract, but Seattle holds his MLS rights.
Steve Zakuani also scored a first half-goal and Roger Levesque scored twice in the second half. Tyson Wahl added a late header for the 5-0 win.
