In their final CONCACAF Champions Cup match, Cruz Azul from the Mexican first division embarrassed the Seattle Sounders by a score of 11-0. The win gave Cruz Azul the 1996 Champions Cup, as Guatemala's Comunicaciones and Mexico's Necaxa tied the following match.

The Sounders were dominated from the opening kickoff, giving up the first goal at 3' and allowing six goals in the first half. Mexican national team star Carlos Hermosillo scored three goals and so did Julio Cesar Yegros.
