In a CONCACAF Champions Cup match, the Seattle Sounders scored early and often, trouncing S.V. Transvaal of the Suriname First Division by a score of 10-0. Transvaal have won the CONCACAF Champions Cup thrice (1970, 1973, 1981), but were in no shape to win it this year. Transvaal have won the Suriname First Division the past three years.
The Republic of Suriname is on the north coast of South America, but competes in the CONCACAF region along with their Caribbean island neighbors. Suriname has a population a bit smaller than Seattle's.
There was some doubt at first whether this match would be played, as Transvaal were upset at finding the playing surface to be artificial turf. But in the end they relented and played.
2' Adair (Aunger). Seattle wasted no time in getting on the board. Mike Gailey's shot from a through ball was deflected out for a corner. Geoff Aunger's corner kick was nodded in at the near post from 3 yards out by Chugger Adair.
15' Adair (Aunger). Aunger was fouled 25 yards from the goal line, near the right touch line. He took the free kick, hitting Adair's head 6 yards out and directly in front of the goal. Adair headed the ball inside the right post to put Seattle up 2-0.
Gailey's blast from 15 yards out looked like it would graze the underside of the crossbar, but Transvaal keeper Roel Tempo produced the match's first good save, leaping to push the ball over with one hand.
32' Gailey (Jenkins). From deep on the left side, Adair dropped to rookie back Scott Jenkins, whose curling cross was headed in off Tempos hand by Gailey at the far post. Seattle 3-0.
38' Gailey (Jenkins). Jenkins curled another cross from the left for a far post run by Gailey, whose diving header went back across the goal and inside the left post. Seattle 4-0.
42' Megson (Aunger). Coach/player Neil Megson beat the offside trap, taking a ball sent over the defense by Aunger and chipping Tempo, who had decided to come out for the ball, from 20 yards out. This was the first match Megson had played in since he was injured in the season opener on April 12.
Seattle 5-0 at the half.
49' Gelvezon (Kinoshita). Kei Kinoshita crossed from the right corner, Gailey on a near post run dummied the ball, and Paul Gelvezon slid in feet first to finish the ball inside the left post. Seattle 6-0.
In Transvaal's best shot of the match, Roy Freeman saw Seattle keeper Dusty Hudock off his line and shot from the edge of the center circle. The ball looked like it would dive under the bar, but Hudock recovered in time to leap and push the ball over for a save.
Transvaal was reduced to ten men when Ricardo Sufrain picked up his second yellow card for a late trip of Aunger. Mike Enneking came on to replace Aunger, who didn't appear to be seriously injured.
70' Crothers (Barton). Twice in two minutes Gailey got free on the right for a good shot, but Tempo saved the first with his legs and came out to block the second. Kieran Barton, on for the second half, gathered the rebound from Tempo's block and passed forward to Derek Crothers, who also entered at halftime. Crothers shot accurately inside the left post before Tempo could recover. Seattle 7-0.
73' Barton (Crothers). Barton, known for his power shot, took a short pass from Crothers and sent in a rocket of a shot from 20 yards. Seattle 8-0.
79' Adair (unassisted). Adair pressured a Transvaal backpass to the keeper, got a foot on Tempo's attempted clearance, and saw the rebound go directly into the net. Seattle 9-0.
82' Barton (Gelvezon). Gelvezon carried the ball forward into the left corner, then angled a diagonal pass back for Barton to run onto and finish from 12 yards. Seattle 10-0 at the final whistle.
Seattle will now advance to a quadrangular final July 15-20 in Guatemala. The winner of that final will earn a berth in the Champions Cup semifinals August 16 at a site to be determined. The Champions Cup final will be held in Washington DC August 24-25.
Seattle's next match is Friday, June 20, against the Orlando Sundogs.
Kickoff will be at 7:30 at Memorial Stadium. This will be Nike Yellow Card
night for the first 1,000 through the gate.
