Match report from Ron Stickney:

Mark Hogenhout scored a hat trick against the team he played for last season (when they were called the Seattle BigFoot), leading the visiting Spokane Shadow to a 5-0 win over the Seattle Sounders Selects. Zach Kingsley notched a pair of goals. The match was a Premier Development League qualifier for the US Open Cup. Both Hogenhout and Kingsley played last fall for the University of Washington.

Admission was free.

First Half

8' Hogenhout. Hogenhout converted Spokane's first shot when he took a square pass 25 yards from goal in the center, settled it, and bent a shot over goalkeeper Jonas Tanzer, who was off his line, and into the top right corner.

Seattle looked like they would make a match of it early. Gabe Provenza put a 25-yard free kick just over the bar. Joe Partridge's low shot was pushed just wide of the far post by Brian Mullen and on the corner kick Joe Vega's header was kicked away by Hogenhout from his station at the far post. Peter Bergford dropped to Vega in the arc for a shot, but Mullen made the diving save.

34' Kingsley (Higgins). Then the tide shifted back in Spokane's favor for most of the rest of the match as Seattle's mids and backs didn't defend well. Zane Higgins pulled the ball back and then burst forward, beating right back Jeff Whiting as he would many times that night, and sent a low cross in front of the goal mouth for the charging Kingsley to finish.

38' Hogenhout. Higgins sent another of his dangerous low balls across the goal mouth from the left side. The ball was weakly cleared to the top of the arc where the unmarked Hogenhout was waiting, said thank you, and shot accurately inside the left post.

Jamie Bloomstine took the last good chance in the half for the Selects when his blast from 20 yards was slightly deflected towards the lower left corner, but Mullen made the save.

Halftime: Seattle 0 – 3 Spokane

James Dickinson replaced Tanzer in goal for Seattle at the break. Tanzer was not having a good night.

62' Hogenhout. Hogenhout completed the hat trick when he took the ball 35 yards out near the right touch line, beat his marker to the inside, advanced up the middle to the arc, and fired past Dickinson.

Dickinson saved shots from just inside the 18 by Billy Sleeth, then by Joe Marks who had only the keeper to beat, then by Kingsley who had been put through on the right.

Seattle substitute Andrew Smith nearly broke the shutout 10 minutes from time when his shot from the right was deflected by a defender and rolled just wide of the far post.

85' Kingsley (Rose). Jeff Rose sent a through pass nicely to Kingsley on a timed run, putting Kingsley alone against Dickinson. Dickinson charged off his line but Kingsley beat him with a low shot.
