Sounders Sign Former UW Midfielder Benjamin Somoza

The Seattle Sounders signed former UW Husky midfielder Benjamin Somoza. Somoza, who played his first professional season with the A-League Portland Timbers last season, will join the Pacific Division leading Sounders in the race for the playoffs.

As a Husky, the Edmonds, Wash. native led his team in points with 17 in his senior season with five goals and seven assists. In his final two collegiate seasons he scored a combined 11 goals. Somoza was named to the All-PAC 10 team in both his junior and senior seasons.

Just after graduation, Somoza was drafted in the second round of the 2002 A-League Draft by Portland. Somoza played 1226 minutes in 22 matches, scoring up one goal for the Timbers last season.

Known for his excellent work ethic and powerful running ability, Somoza actively participates in the community by coaching youth soccer.

Somoza will be added to an already talented group of Sounders midfielders for the second half of the season.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
