Match report from the Seattle Sounders:

The Seattle Sounders were unable to generate much offense and lost 4-0 to the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer in a second round US Open Cup tournament match. The Sounders were hurt by an own goal in the 20th minute, then defender Kieran Barton was sent off in the 26th minute.

The Wizards scored the only goal they would need in the 20th minute when a corner kick taken by Francisco Gomez deflected off defender Ryan Edwards into the net for an own goal. From there, things did not get much better for the Sounders, because in the 26th minute defender Kieran Barton received his second yellow card and was sent off.

With the Sounders down to ten men, it became difficult for them to create offense, but they were only down 1-0 at halftime. However, the second half did not get any better for Seattle.

Kansas City put the match out of reach when midfielder Mark Santel scored an insurance goal in the 58th minute off a pass from former Sounder Andrew Gregor. Midfielder Matt McKeon tallied in the 60th minute, set up by Santel, increasing their lead to 3-0. Kansas City added on to the scoring with their final goal in the 90th minute when second half sub Mike Burns scored on a pass from McKeon.

Kansas City goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi made four saves on nine Seattle shots to record the shutout. Sounders starting goalkeeper Preston Burpo allowed three goals in 67 minutes before giving way to Rich Cullen, who allowed one goal in the final 23 minutes. With the victory, Kansas City move on in the tournament to take on the Chicago Fire in the third round.

This was the first ever meeting between the two teams. Kansas City had been 0-5 in the US Open Cup tournament. Seattle are now 4-6 in the Open Cup, dating back to 1994. The Sounders lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 last year in Fullerton, CA.

Post Match Quotes: Sounders Interim Coach Bernie James:
"We played as well as we could with just 10 men. They (Kansas City) deserve a lot of credit. They played hard and to win as well. It was an uphill struggle after Kieran (Barton) was sent off. We have to put this loss behind us and get ready for Milwaukee on Saturday."

20' Edwards own goal. Seattle defender Ryan Edwards headed a Francisco Gomez corner kick into this own goal in the 20th minute. Kansas City had controlled play in the first 20 minutes.

28' Seattle defender Kieran Barton was sent off with his second yellow card for a slide into Gomez. Seattle balanced play for the remainder of the half in spite of being a man down.

59' Santel. Unassisted.

60' McKeon (Santel). Matt McKeon heads in a pass from Santel.

89' Burns (McKeon). Kansas City puts the icing on the cake, a rare Mike Burns goal to finish with a 4-0 edge.
