Kudos to the ownership group for this! The announcement says that the team name will be announced on Apr 7 at 11:00 AM, with fans invited to join in a live webcast. Details: Fans invited to vote for team name.
Want to meet the signed Sounders up close and personal? Check out the quick video interviews by David from GOALSeattle.com. Of particular interest is Sebastien Le Toux saying that he signed for 5 years, which means one with the 2008 Sounders and 4 with the Seattle MLS side! That would make Seba the first signed player for the MLS team.

It's Seattle native and ex-Sounder Ian Russell fielding this version of 10 questions: Ten questions with Ian Russell.
Here's our opinion on voting for the name of the Seattle MLS team. The choices offered by the team are Seattle Alliance, Seattle Republic, or Seattle FC. With our votes, our first choice will be a write-in name, Sounders. Now, they're probably not going to allow write-in candidates like they would in a real democracy, so let us look at the three choices offered. Alliance? That is the name of the Northshore Youth Soccer Association development (select) teams. It doesn't make sense to name the MLS team after the Northshore youth teams, does it? Seattle Republic? Would we be the Republicans? The name might work in Eastern Washington, but never in Seattle, which consistently votes heavily Democratic. That leaves Seattle FC. We suppose we could live with it. Seattle FC is just asking for a team nickname, and Sounders would fill the void nicely!
A P-I blog reports that in a new P-I online poll regarding the MLS team name, 75% of the 700 readers voted for Sounders, 10% chose Seattle FC, and "none of the above" was third, ahead of Seattle Alliance and Seattle Republic.
From the P-I: MLS franchise hires Wright: Veteran Seahawks VP to oversee business side. And from MLSinSeattle.com: Gary Wright to oversee MLS Seattle business operations.
Mar 24 - Naming the new MLS team is turning into a big mess, much bigger than it needed to be. On Mar 20 MLSinSeattle.com confirmed the rumors that the new team would not be named Sounders. The choices? Seattle Alliance, Seattle Republic, or Seattle FC. Many fans took exception to the title of that news release, "MLS Seattle takes lead with democracy in sports." Throwing gasoline on the fire was a Mar 21 article posted at MLSinSeattle.com, since removed for being too flippant. To those soccer fans who are not happy that the name candidates did not include Sounders, the article said, "If not, get over it." GOALSeattle.com has a good recap of the article: Not a good PR week for Seattle MLS. You can find the original text from the Mar 21 article archived on the WeAreECS.com forum here.
Regarding the 2008 Sounders, we've updated our roster page after GOALSeattle.com posted a list of players from the recent open tryout followed by a list of players in camp. As for last year's players who have not already been signed for 2008, the only one in camp is Craig Tomlinson, who played the second half in Saturday's preseason match.
Mar 22 - Preseason opener: Seattle Sounders 1 - 2 Vancouver Whitecaps (Levesque 44; Jordan 15, Sebrango 64).
Mar 21 - The P-I disses the three MLS team names reportedly up for the vote and notes the absence of the popular choice, "Sounders": Soccer team names? No gooaaaallll, cry fans. The ownership group, who have done things splendidly until now, seem to be making a huge PR blunder by discarding the Sounders name, which would probably win a vote by a huge margin with the 13,000 who have put down season ticket deposits. "Taking the lead with democracy in sports"? We don't think so.
Mar 20 - "Soccer fans are invited to vote for the name of the new Major League Soccer team in Seattle, the club announced today." Details: MLS Seattle takes lead with democracy in sports. Unfortunately, "The three naming options ... will not include Sounders." What a shame -- if "Sounders" was a choice, it would probably win in a landslide. I wonder if they'll allow write-in candidates?
