Sounders midfielder Leighton O'Brien scored a hat-trick, all on penalty kicks, helping Seattle to a 3-2 over the El Paso Patriots in El Paso, TX. The victory keeps the Sounders' slim playoff hopes alive.
The Sounders overcame two ejections to earn their first ever win in El Paso. Sounders midfielder Viet Nguyen was sent off in the 6th minute after a hard tackle on an El Paso player. Sounders Coach Bernie James was dismissed from the pitch in the same minute by referee Jesse Johnson, protesting the call against Nguyen.
O'Brien's penalty kicks came in the 59th, 69th and 80th minutes. The first penalty kick was the result of an El Paso foul against a Sounders player in the penalty area. The second call occurred when Patriots goalkeeper James Llamas committed a foul against a Sounders player and the third one was the result of a handling call against an El Paso player in the box. O'Brien is Seattle's leading scorer with 9 goals and 6 assists in 17 matches.
El Paso had taken a 1-0 lead when Omar Mora scored his fifth goal of the season in the 18th minute. Mike Griego closed the scoring at 3-2 with his penalty kick goal in the 88th minute.
Sounders goalkeeper Rich Cullen earned his first victory for Seattle, filling in for starting goalkeeper Preston Burpo who was out due to injury. The Sounders were also without defender Kieran Barton, who did not play due to suspension, and Jason Farrell, who was called up to the Los Angles Galaxy (MLS) for this weekend. Seattle defender Casey Barber started, seeing his first action as a Sounder after playing most of the season for the Sounders Select. Kyle Smith started at forward because of injuries on the team, after taking an overnight flight to El Paso for the game.
Both Nguyen and James were trapped in the Sounders locker room for an extended period after the red cards and were freed only after calls to the El Paso General Manager were made.
