The Seattle Sounders rocked the Atlanta Ruckus to the tune of 7-0 on a sunny, windy afternoon in Seattle. Atlanta, with only two substitutes, had been softened up in a 1-0 loss at Vancouver two nights earlier. David Hoggan opened and closed the scoring, sandwiching (it was a big sandwich) the first goals of the season by midfielders Paul Gelvezon and Kei Kinoshita. Mike Gailey added a pair to the sandwich and Chugger Adair added one goal. This match broke the Sounder record for goals in an A-League match. Seattle goalkeeper Dusty Hudock earned his eighth shutout of the season with some great saves. Hudock and his trusty defenders have allowed just one goal in the past seven games.

2' Hoggan (unassisted): Seattle got on the board early when Geoff Aunger's corner kick was deflected away for Hoggan to run onto. Hoggan shot low through the crowd in the area and inside the far post.

From the kickoff play, Atlanta's Adeola Ayegbaroju shot from the right touch line and the wind forced keeper Dusty Hudock to readjust his position to catch the ball in front of the top left corner. At the other end Gelvezon tried to head a cross on goal and Ayegbaroju got there in time to deflect the shot out for a throw-in, but on the follow through Ayegbaroju's face met Gelvezon's forehead and Ayegbaroju stayed down a few minutes to recover, then continued playing.

At 11' Atlanta's recently signed returnee Justin Fashanu took a pass from Sylvan Bednar and fired a 25 yard shot to the upper right corner, but Hudock leaped to push the ball over the bar with one hand for the save of the game.

At the other end Adair's ground pass from the right was fired by Gailey low to the near post but Eddie Carvacho dove to make a fine save.

22' Gelvezon (Adair): Adair headed a forward pass square about eight yards from the end line. Gelvezon was there to head just inside the near post for his first goal as a Sounder. Gelvezon first played for the Sounders 16 days earlier under what was billed as a two-week trial contract. His presence today indicates that he probably earned a spot on the roster for the balance of the season.

27' Adair (Gailey): Hoggan held the ball on the left, juked a defender and crossed past the far post. Just before the ball crossed the end line, Gailey headed it back in front of the goal and Adair came charging in to head it just inside the right post from six yards out.

Atlanta came back with two shots, a 25 yarder from Bigu that was caught by Hudock and 25 yard free kick that hit the wall. In the final minute, Stilian Shiskov took a powerful free kick from the 18 yard line that cleared the wall three yards from the goal and looked good, but Hudock leaped and put up both arms to parry the ball, which fell for a defender to clear from the area.

Halftime excitement - Faithful, front-row Sounders fan Xandra Esko of Lake Forest Park, wearing her way cool Sounders scarf, made the shot that your reporter missed a week earlier. From the penalty spot, she hit the hole in the upper right corner to win some free Nike gear. Xandra is this year's first halftime shot winner; last year there was one winner.

Opening the second half, Atlanta forward Fashanu and Seattle keeper Hudock collided going for an air ball near the top of the area. Hudock got to the ball first to punch it and Fashanu got called for the foul.

Defender Scott Jenkins set Gailey free on the left for Seattle's first shot of the half, sent wide left. Adair's header from a Gailey cross was on goal at the near post, but Carvacho dove for the save.

At 54' Kei Kinoshita replaced Gelvezon at Seattle's left mid spot as Gelvezon limped off the field, apparently injured.

From an Atlanta corner kick, Bednar headed sharply toward the top of the goal but Hudock parried the ball straight up, then caught it.

The other way Justin Stoddard's cross was on target for a Gailey header from 15 yards, but Carvacho dove to catch the ball at the far post.

71' Gailey (Adair): Adair got free in front of the goal with only Carvacho to beat, but his shot hit the left post squarely and came back. Gailey ran in to mop up, hitting the empty net from 8 yards. Atlanta appealed for an offside call, but Gailey had clearly been behind Adair when Adair took the shot; not offside.

A minute later, Adair chipped the ball in front of the goal for Kinoshita, but a defender just beat Kinoshita to the ball to head clear.

75' Kinoshita (Gailey): Stoddard's free kick from the right touch line was headed down by Gailey for Kinoshita to run onto. Kinoshita would not be denied this time, shooting low inside the far post.

77' Gailey (Adair): Adair was pulled down by Boardman as Adair played the ball. Advantage was allowed as Gailey finished with a hard shot from 20 yards.

At the other end Hudock had to come out to block a shot by Bednar inside the area after Bednar had been set free on the right with a through ball. Bednar soon got another shot from the 15 yards on the right when a ball that had rattled around the area came to him, but Bednar shot over the bar.

At 84' Gailey, helping back on defense, left a ball for Hudock 15 yards out from the area, but Hudock's attempted clearance hit Gailey in the face and he stayed down for a few minutes to recover. The ball came back to Hudock, who cleared it.

86' Hoggan (Enneking): On the attack, Enneking drew the last defender and laid the ball off for Hoggan, who controlled and then hit the upper right corner perfectly. Your reporter was looking right down the barrel on this shot, and the ball passed within an inch of both the crossbar and the post, giving Carvacho no chance.

At the end Crothers took Seattle's last shot, a 30 yarder just over. Bednar shot for Atlanta, a long shot that caught Hudock off his line, but the ball just cleared the crossbar and settled on top of the net.

The win pulls Seattle to within two points of Pacific Division leader Vancouver, setting up a contest for first place next Saturday, June 14, at 1:00 in Seattle.
