The Seattle Sounders smoked Team Sacramento 6-0, sweeping the season's 4-match series between the two sides and leaving Sacramento winless on the season. The three Sounders starting forwards, Erik Storkson, Ian Russell and Mark Baena, each scored two goals, giving the Sounders their sixth straight victory. Storkson scored a pair in the first half, then Russell scored a pair early in the second half, and Mark Baena scored a pair late. Sounders goalkeeper Bill May recorded four saves to earn his first home shutout. The victory clinched a playoff spot for the Sounders for the sixth straight season. The win also propelled Seattle into second place in the Pacific Division with 71 points, passing Vancouver, who lost to Orange County tonight.
Alex Nouri, on his twentieth birthday, came on for the Sounders in the second half. Nouri had just returned from Germany to get his visa. Ralph Robertson sat out the match with a groin pull.
First Half
2' SAC- Rohrer took a hard shot that sailed high over the net.
3' SEA- Baena trapped a ball in the penalty box area. Baena volleyed
the ball to Heald, who hit a shot first time, forcing a save by Landon.
21' SEA- After a throw-in, Henderson made a cross into the penalty
area for Storkson. Storkson, running through the penalty area ten yards
out, headed the ball into the lower right corner of the net for a goal.
SEA 1-0 SAC.
40' SEA- Heald started a break by passing to Baena. Baena, moving with
the ball towards the goal, crossed just inside the penalty area to Russell.
Russell, running towards the goal, took a shot towards the open net. Russell's
shot hit goalkeeper Landon and bounced away.
43' SEA- Baena gained control of the ball just outside the penalty
area. Baena flicked the ball into the penalty area to Storkson. Storkson
quickly controlled the ball, turned and shot. Landon blocked the shot but
the rebound bounced off a Sacramento defender's shin and into the net.
SEA 2-0 SAC.
Halftime: Seattle 2 - 0 Sacramento
47' SEA- A throw-in by Henderson went to Annicchero, who out-jumped
two defenders and headed the ball to Russell, who was standing at the far
left post. Russell volleyed a shot that went into the lower left corner
for a goal. SEA 3-0 SAC.
54' SEA- Mercado fouled Russell in the penalty area, which resulted
in a penalty kick. On the penalty kick, Russell waited for Landon to dive
first and shot and scored to the center of the net. SEA 4-0 SAC.
69' SEA- Mann sent a long cross from 35 yards out. The cross went on
net and Landon had to make a diving save to knock the ball away.
76' SEA- A Waibel hard shot from 30 yards out forced a Landon save.
84' SEA- Nguyen, with space, ran down the right side of the pitch towards
the goal. Nguyen crossed the ball into the penalty area for Baena. Baena
volleyed the cross into the lower left corner of the net for a goal. SEA
5-0 SAC.
86' SEA- Mann, with the ball on left side, dribbled around a defender
going towards the goal. Mann passed into the penalty area for Baena. Baena
trapped the ball, turned and shot, beating Landon low to the left side
of the net. SEA 6-0 SAC.
