Match report by Ron Stickney:

The Seattle Sounders and the Vancouver 86ers entered this match tied in points (79) and holding identical 16-2-1-7 (W-SW-SL-L) records. They played to a 1-1 draw, with Seattle winning the CrapShootout to take the odd point and the slim lead in the table. The match was scoreless until midway in the second half when Eduardo Sebrango set up John Sulentic for the 86ers goal. In the 82nd minute Vancouver goalkeeper Paul Shepherd fumbled away the ball and the win, giving Peter Hattrup an easy shot into an empty net for the draw.

Seattle head coach Neil Megson served a suspension this match after being dismissed in the previous match. Also sitting out were regular defenders Jason Annicchero and Craig Waibel, both due to yellow card accumulation. Seattle played with an unusual 2-6-2 formation, with Kieran Barton and Randy Mann the only backs.

First Half

2' SEA - Ex-86er Oliver Heald put the first shot on goal from the left side of the penalty area, but Shepherd caught the ball that was aimed at the top far corner.

8' VAN - Steve MacDonald headed Alfredo Valente's corner kick over the top corner for Vancouver's first shot.

9' SEA - Sean Henderson sprinted up the middle and got the ball for a full-speed-ahead shot from 25 yards that went a yard or two wide of the far post.

14' VAN - Sebrango headed Sulentic's long free kick wide left.

17' SEA - Viet Nguyen's cross from the right was punched away by Shepherd as Ian Russell almost reached the cross.

19' SEA - Alexander Nouri's cross from the left touch line gave Russell a half chance that was poked over the bar.

22' SEA - From Shan Gaw's feed, Nouri beat his marker while moving parallel to the goal line just inside the penalty area, then Nouri shot low and hit the base of the left post. The ball rebounded squarely across the goal mouth and rolled along the goal line outside the goal. A millimeter to the right and Nouri would have had his first goal for the Sounders.

25' SEA - Mark Baena was sprung with a through ball but was pulled as he shot. No foul was called.

31' VAN - Jeff Skinner put a 20-yarder from the left on goal, forcing goalkeeper Bill May's first save.

33' VAN - Sulentic's cross to the far post gave Niall Thompson a header from 10 yards, but he hit the side netting.

35' VAN - Thompson checked May's concentration with a first-bounce shot from 35 yards, but May had it covered.

39' VAN - Nico Berg collected the garbage from an 86er corner kick and crossed for MacDonald, whose near-post header was sent well over the bar.

Halftime:  Seattle 0 - 0 Vancouver

48' VAN - Sulentic's cross/shot from the right was taken by a diving May.

51' VAN - From Valente's corner kick, Berg tried a 25-yarder from the left and was a couple of yards over the top far corner.

55' SEA - Nguyen beat a man to put a rolling pass in close to goal for Baena, but the close shot was blocked by Shepherd.

56' VAN - Sulentic got an open shot from the right from Sebrango's serve, but Sulentic sent it wide of the near post.

57' VAN - Chris Franks replaced Valente.

62' VAN - Sulentic overlapped on the right for a shot from Sebrango's pass but was again wide of the near post.

65' SEA - Forward Erik Storkson came on for Gaw and Seattle were in a very offense-minded 2-5-3 formation.

66' VAN - Sulentic (Sebrango). Sebrango received a pass near the right corner of the goal area and rolled a diagonal drop pass into the path of Sulentic, who fired up the middle from 15 yards and placed the ball just inside the left post. SEA 0 - 1 VAN.

75' SEA - Peter Hattrup subbed in for Heald.

75' VAN - Sulentic got free and received the ball just 8 yards from goal for a shot with only May to beat, but May made a reaction save with his hands and a defender cleared the rebound from danger.

77' SEA - Scott Jenkins replaced Randy Mann at right back.

82' SEA - Hattrup. A Seattle corner kick produced a long shot by Ralph Robertson that was deflected well wide to the left of goal. Rather than yield the corner kick, Shepherd leaped and tried to grab the ball, only to fumble it onto the pitch. Hattrup stepped forward to calmly place the shot into the empty net as Shepherd was out of the picture. SEA 1 - 1 VAN.

89' SEA - Seattle had the last two shots of regulation. First Hattrup held the ball until he could earn a shot from 20 yards that forced a save at the bottom far corner, then Storkson's 18-yarder was wide of the far post.

Regulation:  Seattle 1 - 1 Vancouver

91' - Seattle's Bernie James came on for Nguyen, and for the visitors Jason Jordan and Carmen D'Onofrio replaced Thompson and Tony Fonseca.

91' VAN - A Vancouver attacker ran free up the right side for a shot, pushed just wide of the far post by May.

94' VAN - Sulentic put a diagonal, 25-yard free kick from the right on goal and May dove to save.

96' VAN - It was still all Vancouver in the overtime period as Sulentic tried a 30-yarder up the middle, forcing another save by May.

99' VAN - Sebrango won a loose ball for a quick shot up the middle from 25 yards, sent barely wide of the left post.

104' SEA - Finally a chance for Seattle when Nouri's corner kick produced a goalmouth scramble, but neither Hattrup nor Henderson could put the elusive ball into the net. Then Nouri's cross from the left was across the goal mouth, but Baena and a sliding Storkson couldn't quite reach the ball.

Final:  Seattle 1 - 1 Vancouver

CrapShootout

Seattle won the CrapShootout. If we are lucky, the A-League will get rid of the CrapShootout for next season and this one will be the last CrapShootout seen by the Sounders.
